CfM Student Semi-finalist in SPIE Start-up Challenge

Hossein Alisafaee, an aspiring photonics entrepreneur and a CfM student working with professor Michael Fiddy at UNCC has been named a semi-finalist in the 2014 SPIE Startup Challenge. His submitted project title is “Metamaterial Dispersion Device” and the final product is expected to be a compact metamaterial dispersion compensator for use in the telecom industry. In any application in which signal or image dispersion is faulty, a metamaterial structure could be designed to provide a correction. In this project, he focuses on time domain dispersion and the dispersion corrector or compensator operating at a 1.55 micron wavelength.

The semi-finalists will compete in a pitch contest before a panel of business development experts and venture capitalists at SPIE Photonics West. Winners will be announced at the event. SPIE will provide support for winners to attend a week-long entrepreneur "boot camp" for further help in refining their ideas.
If you are planning to attend the Photonics West conference, please stop by and support Hossein during the contest by attending the live pitch finals that will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 5th at the Moscone Center.
